In recent years, the need to an effective large-scale bird monitoring has grown alongside concerns related to climate change and biodiversity loss.
Citizen science and weather radar databases can facilitate continuous frequent observations of large-scale birds by complementing each other spatially and temporally.
Nadja Weisshaupt will explain us the challenges and the benefits of these two observational sources and their potential for studying migration.
Weisshaupt is currently closely involved with these issues as she is doing her post doctorate in the GloBAM. Her project consist of studying bird migration in Finnish airspace using ornithological data from citizen science and weather radar data of the Finnish Meteorological Institute.
