The set of monumental olive trees make up a unique ancestral natural ecosystem, which is why we call it the olive grove ecosystem. It is a dry, fragile ecosystem, where the species have special characteristics. The olive grove ecosystem is very important to maintain certain vulnerable species such as birds of prey, micromammals and some reptiles that constitute spaces of high ecological value. As an example, they constitute hunting areas for the second population of Montagu’s harrier in Catalonia and are part of the territory of the Bonelli’s eagle A territory where we can observe a multitude of species: the roller, the little kestrel, the red-footed falcon, etc. These monumental olive groves constitute one of the most impressive and ancient agricultural landscapes in Europe and the world. For this reason, GEPEC-EdC has created “The Reserve of Monumental Olive Groves of the Terres de l’Ebre” and Xavier Jiménez Llobera and Marc Torrents Camps will guide us through it.
