CONSERVATION PROJECT 2026:

Conservation Project for the European Roller and Steppe Birds in the Dry Plains of Alt Camp

The 12th edition of the Delta Birding Festival will donate the profits from ticket sales to the conservation project for the European roller and steppe birds presented by the local organization GEPEC-EdC. The project aims to protect threatened farmland bird species in one of the last Mediterranean agroforestry mosaics in the Camp de Tarragona region. In response to habitat loss, intensive pesticide use, and the effects of climate change, the initiative has been promoting applied conservation actions since 2015. Its main activities include the installation of nest boxes, scientific monitoring of bird populations, chick ringing, and studies on the impact of temperature inside artificial nesting shelters. The project will also support the conservation of the little owl, the little bustard, and the greater short-toed lark through agreements with farmers and farmland stewardship measures. By combining research, land management, and social participation, the project seeks to enhance biodiversity and preserve the area’s traditional agricultural landscape.
