This year’s featured film will be the documentary “L’Odissea del vell marí”, directed by Núria Abad and Marta Hierro, a MOM Works production with associate production by CaixaForum+.

The Mediterranean monk seal, endemic to the Mediterranean and considered extinct for decades, was rediscovered in a remote corner of Mauritania. There, successive teams of biologists embarked on an extraordinary and risky mission that has managed to halt its decline and ensure the survival of the last remaining individuals.
“L’Odissea del vell marí” is a scientific road movie that combines live-action footage and animation to tell a double odyssey: that of a species persecuted, driven from its habitat and pushed to the brink of extinction; and that of the biologists and researchers who, for decades, have fought to understand and protect it under often extreme conditions and with limited resources. From the rugged shores of Mauritania to the last refuges in Greece and Turkey, the documentary follows the trail of the Mediterranean monk seal and those who refuse to accept its disappearance. Meanwhile, in the western Mediterranean, the dream of its return is beginning to re-emerge. A hope that is still fragile and poses a new challenge: making it possible for the Mediterranean monk seal to one day inhabit our shores once again.

The documentary will be screened on Saturday, 19 September, at 10:00 pm in the Poblenou del Delta Sports Hall, and admission will be free. On the morning of Sunday, 20 September, it will be be screened again in the Carpa de Documentals from 10:30 am to 11:30 pm for anyone who was unable to attend the Saturday evening screening. Following the screening, from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm in the Carpa Àgora, the directors will take part in a panel discussion exploring the story of the Mediterranean monk seal through a perspective that brings together science, conservation and cinema, joined by Joan Mayol, Lluis Toldrà and Jordi Sargatal.
