Quetzal y agricultura: La alianza que protege una de las aves más bellas del mundo

Alfredo Scott holds a degree in Tropical Biology and a master’s degree in Ecotourism Planning. He has devoted many years to teaching and served as curator of the Entomology Collection at the University of Costa Rica. Since 1995, he has worked as a birding guide and is the owner of Wildbird Tours, a tour operator specializing in birdwatching and nature photography.

During this talk, he will present the Kabek Project, which demonstrates how conservation can benefit both nature and rural communities. In the highlands of Costa Rica, local farmers have chosen to protect the trees where the Resplendent Quetzal nests, one of the most beautiful and iconic birds of the Americas. This initiative supports the species’ breeding success and long-term conservation while creating economic opportunities for local communities. Landowners generate income through visitor access, local guides gain new employment opportunities, and visitors enjoy outstanding opportunities to observe and photograph wild quetzals.

Kabek shows that agriculture, tourism, and conservation can work hand in hand to create shared benefits and promote the protection of biodiversity.
