Mya-Rose Craig AKA Birdgirl is a 22 year old British Bangladeshi birder, Conservationist & environmentalist. She was the youngest person to see half the world’s bird at age 17 but is committed to saving nature, campaigning to stop biodiversity loss and climate breakdown, whilst respecting indigenous people and highlighting Global Climate Justice.
In February 2020, she became the youngest person to be awarded an honorary Doctorate of Science for her pioneering work campaigning with her organisation Black2Nature, leading the fight for equal access to nature for Visible Minority Ethnic people, organising teenage and children’s nature camps and high profile conferences and campaigning to make the sector ethnically diverse. She has written three award winning books, including her memoir, Birdgirl, which has been published in the USA and in 7 languages with a graphic novel due out and has shared a stage with Emma Watson and Greta Thunberg as a climate activist.
In the DBF, Mya-Rose will be talking about growing up birding with her family, some of the birds she has seen on her travels; her experiences travelling as a young child, why engaging everyone with nature is essential for mental health and saving the planet, her charity Black2Nature, activism relating to biodiversity loss, climate change and ethnic diversity and her three books, her memoir Birdgirl, her book for teens We Have a Dream and children’s book Flight.
