Ricard Gutiérrez is head of Generalitat de Catalunya Wildlife Conservation Section of the Fauna and Flora Service, he was director of the Delta del Llobregat Natural Reserves between 1990 and 2005 and has directed the network of protected natural areas, in aside from working on coastal and marine biodiversity.
The inaugural conference of the Delta Birding Festival 2024 will be given by Ricard, who will talk about the recovery of our threatened anatids. The catalog of threatened fauna of Catalonia declares 112 species in danger of extinction. Among them there are three anatids and a rallid that share habitats: the ferruginous duck, the white-headed duck, the marbrenc teal and the red-knobbed coot. We are working on the recovery of these species. The vulnerability of the habitat, the presence of exotic species or the lack of population numbers apart from accidental hunting, predation, epizootics, hybridization with other species or climate change are their main threats. Is saving them mission impossible? What is clear is that without decisive and collaborative actions we will not improve its state of conservation, which is why there is no need to waste time moving forward.
