Emma Guinart – The Kentish plover and the Sisyphus myth. Future strategies and lines of action

Emma Guinart is an environmentalist with a special interest in ecology and conservation biology, and also in the different methods of population estimation of some species. She is a founding member of the Pelagicus association and currently works at Natura Montfred, a company dedicated to the conservation of protected and threatened species in Catalonia.

At the Delta Birding Festival, he will talk to us about a cosmopolitan wader, the Kentish plover, which inhabits the beaches of our coast. A species that necessarily coexists with intensive human use of the beaches in spring and summer, which implies that it has to overcome multiple threats that eventually result in low reproductive success. Its reproductive strategy based on sequential polyandry gives it an extra chance and greater resilience to extinction, but limited. Taking into account the ecological requirements of this species, firm strategic actions are needed by the administrations but at the same time dynamic and adaptable. Actions that have recently been included in the species conservation plan.
