Jordi Palau – Rewilding, an opportunity for the rural economy

Jordi Palau is a Forest Engineer with a Master’s degree in Protected Natural Areas. He has mainly worked in the fields of planning and management of natural areas, biodiversity conservation, management of large domestic and wild herbivores, rural development, ecotourism, and environmental education.

He actively contributed to the creation of the only three protected areas in Andorra and was co-director of the LIFE project Pirineu viu, focused on sustainable forest management of mountain forests. In 2020, he published with Lynx Edicions the book Rewilding Iberia. Explorando el potencial de la renaturalización en España, the first publication to extensively analyze the rewilding phenomenon in Spain. He currently works as Rewilding Director at Rewilding.

In this talk, he will show us how renaturalization or rewilding can generate economic opportunities for rural territories while restoring natural processes. Among other opportunities, ecotourism and birdwatching tourism can play a key role, both for nature and for rural society.
