Juan José Ramos Melo – The Migration of Seabirds from the Buenavista Lighthouse (Tenerife)

Juan José Ramos is a naturalist, specialist in biodiversity outreach and conservation, and a nature and travel photographer.

The “Buenavista Lighthouse Migration Observatory” is a project by the company Birding Canarias that combines research, conservation, environmental volunteering, and citizen science. Its main objectives are to document the migratory phenology and status of seabirds in the waters of the Canary Islands archipelago, as well as to assess the importance of these waters as a migratory corridor with a view to their future protection.

Juan José will tell us more about the monitoring sessions of this unique global-impact migratory phenomenon, which have been taking place since the summer of 2023. During these sessions, different bird species are recorded, along with the number of individuals of each species, flight directions, as well as climatic data, sea conditions, and the presence of cetaceans.

The project has received support and collaboration from Alaemon Conservación, Fundación Canarina, the Government of the Canary Islands, and the municipalities of Los Silos and Buenavista del Norte.
