Wild journeys: tracking long distance migration (conference in english)

Long-distance migration is widespread among birds to exploit seasonal resources.

Individuals of many species travel between continents and negotiate vast barriers of sea and desert. Only recent developments in tracking technologies has allowed tracking of even the smallest songbirds. Such trackings has revealed complex and narrowly-defined species-specific routes and non-breeding staging sites in the longest-distance migrating land birds which appear fine-tuned to gain resources along the routes.

Kasper Thorup, ecologist and Scientific Advisor of the Copenhagen Bird Ringing Centre located in the Natural History Museum of Denmark, will showcase through his conference the variety of migration strategies including some of the wildest journeys such as cuckoos travelling from Kamchatka to Namibia. He will also highlight some of the challenges birds have to overcome along the routes and the future of migration during climate change.
