Jordi Baucells is a biologist, agricultural technical engineer and licensed bird ringer who has been involved in ornithology since the mid-1980s. He is currently the president of the Catalan Institute of Ornithology (ICO).
Thermal imaging devices have revolutionised the study of many bird species, especially nocturnal, elusive and hard-to-detect birds, as well as those living in habitats with limited visibility.
In this talk, Jordi Baucells will draw on his own experience to explain how this technology allows birds to be detected and monitored without disturbance, making it easier to carry out censuses, behavioural studies, nest location and conservation work. At the same time, the HIKMICRO team will introduce the technical features of thermal imaging devices, explaining how they work, which specifications matter most (such as resolution, thermal sensitivity, magnification, field of view and battery life), and what to consider when choosing the right equipment for different applications, whether for professional use or birdwatching enthusiasts.
